Obituary

Bruce Scott Swab, beloved life partner, son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend, passed away at home from metastatic liver cancer in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 8:15pm, surrounded and embraced by his life partner, mother and sister. He was born in Cumberland, Maryland on August 14, 1959, the son of Wilma Grace Swab and the late Raymond Kenneth Swab. Bruce was 50 years old. Bruce graciously lived a beautifully diverse life. A 1977 graduate of Fort Hill High School, Bruce served four years in the United States Air Force for whom he trained at the Presidio of Monterey, specializing in Russian reconnaissance; excelled as the friendliest bartender in Austin; managed hotel reservations staff for a few prominent hotel chains in Texas and Michigan; and, beginning in 1990, traveled to exotic locales around the world as a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines' newly created Honolulu, Hawai'i base. Throughout it all, he never failed to touch those around him with his sweet spirit, shining smile and uproarious sense of humor. Bruce's Connection to Hawai'i: Bruce's part-time residency in Honolulu began in 1990 with the opening of Northwest Airlines' Honolulu base, for which he was a flight attendant. From 1997 - 2003, he was a permanent resident. Bruce felt immediately at-home and at-peace in the Islands. A life-long enthusiast for the outdoors and natural beauty, Bruce thought he had found his paradise for which he had been searching his whole life. Even as a young boy, his grandmother penned him "nature boy." The beaches, the climate, the lush valleys, the people, the food, the Aloha Spirit -- all these were firmly and gratefully embraced by him. We all like to think that Bruce was a local man trapped in a white man's body! Bruce held a special place in his heart for his family. Although the miles separated him from Maryland in his adult years, he was always happy to return home to Cumberland to spend quality time with those he loved. Bruce believed that life should be lived fully. "Live your life strong, happy and to the fullest," is what he told others; and he lived his life accordingly, setting a perfect example for all of us to follow and appreciate. Bruce will be remembered for his strength, honesty, tenacity, individualism, love for friends and family, appreciation for all that was beautiful in nature, compassion for life, dedication to his relationships, hilarious wit and his big, infectious smile. To say he will be missed is a tremendous understatement. This gentle and kind soul will live on in our hearts and memories, inspiring us and affecting us forever--reminding us to be true to ourselves and to always live life fully. He once told a friend, "Once that tax-man comes collecting, you don't want to have any regrets." Bruce is survived by his life partner, Leo Tee (Los Angeles); his mother, Wilma Swab (Cumberland); two sisters: Vicki J. Simms (Moon Township, PA), and Carol A. Klein and her husband, Alan (Cumberland); a brother, Raymond C. Swab, and his wife, Lien (Ocala, FL); treasured aunts and uncles; dear in-laws: Lana Tee, Jonathan & Joan Morse; nephews and nieces: Jocelyn Simms, Justin Simms, Drew Klein, Kara Klein, Tony Scarpa, Benjamin Thomas Morse and Zachary Bruce Morse; and many loving family members from both the Swab and Tee clans. His father, Raymond Swab, and father-in-law, Benjamin Tee, precede him in death. A celebration of Bruce's life was held on April 3, 2010 at the Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California, as well as on April 9, 2010 at the LaVale United Methodist Church, LaVale, Maryland. At his request, Bruce's ashes were scattered over his father's and grandparents' graves in Maryland and Pennsylvania and in Honolulu, Hawai'i over the waters off Waikiki...near Diamond Head. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Project Angel Food (www.angelfood.org or 323.845.1800), for which he volunteered, or to the UCLA Care Center (http://uclacarecenter.org/pdf/CARE%20donation.pdf or checks payable to UCLA Foundation/CARE, c/o Charles Price, Division Administrator, 9911 W.
