Obituary for Captain Richard Kealiiaukai Haller Captain Haller was born in Los Angeles and came to Honolulu when his father was working as an ironworker building Pearl Harbor in the late 1930's. In Hawaii many families were very welcoming. After returning to Los Angeles Capt. Dick decided to return after the death of his mother and lied about his age to join the Merchant Marines. Mrs. Violet Nakea and her family became his adopted family upon his return to the islands. Mrs. Nakea introduced Dick to feather lei making and that was a hobby he enjoyed until his death. In the 1960s the Captain was the 11th District Chairman for the Democratic Party of Hawaii and remained an adamant Democratic supporter. Seeing President Kennedy elected to the White House was a special highlight especially as Hawaii was a young state. The Captain traveled the world on numerous commercial vessels including freighters, fishing vessels and ultimately large passenger ships. He spent time serving the Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine in the Atlantic War Zone in World War II and in the waters around Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The Captain attained the rating of "Any vessel, any ocean", maintaining his membership in the Masters Mates & Pilots Association. Predeceased by his parents George and Albina (Buffa) Haller and sister Yvonne Haller Mabe. He is survived by wife Enriqueta (Cathy) Haller, sister Marie Louise Cowman of Scottsdale, AZ and nieces and nephews Richard Cowman (Cyndi), Allison Cowman Hoffer (Scott), Edward Allen Mabe (Eve), Janice Mabe Torres (John) and Penny Mabe Chambers Tom). Great nieces and nephews Tyler Cowman, Amber Cowman, Brandon Hoffer, Ryan Hoffer, Nathan Chambers, Evan Chambers and Beatrice Chambers.
