Obituary

Dave Scott June 26, 1953 – April 27, 2023

Dave was a mathematics teacher who used to come to Kauai during his summer breaks from teaching.

After his retirement, when he and his wife Kim met and started traveling frequently to Kauai together, he would always step off the plane and say "Ahhhh."  This was his Nirvana.  And on every trip, he would say how much he would love to someday have his ashes scattered in the Pacific surrounding Kauai. This is just one way we can honor this wonderful man.

Dave was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California.  He was a long-distance runner, a polymath, a talented mechanic who restored a classic Mustang in his spare time, and most importantly, a people person.  Dave loved to socialize, to meet new people and to tell stories and corny dad jokes.  He was a beloved math teacher and following his retirement, he'd often run into former students who would say, "Mr. Scott!  My favorite teacher."  That always brought him joy.

Dave was a sensitive and gentle soul who had a gift for living in the present moment and making those around him feel important and loved.  He loved nothing more than to be of service, always willing to help.

Although not a religious person, he admired "The Way of the Bodhisattva:"

"May I be a guard for those who are protectorless,

A guide for those who journey on the road.

For those who wish to cross the water,

May I be a boat, a raft, a bridge."

And Dave was a hopeless romantic.  When Dave and Kim exchanged wedding vows on the beach in Hawaii, they surprised each other with similar poetry.  Dave cherished this from the poet Rumi:

"The moment I heard my first love story, I started looking for you.  Not knowing how foolish that was.  Lovers don't finally meet.  They're in each other's hearts all along."

Dave lives on in the hearts of all who he loved so freely and deeply and generously.  Rest in peace, wonderful, sweet Dave Scott.  You are home.
