Obituary

Iris Lillian (Cowie) Hallaran
November 28, 1915 - November 2, 2015

Our wonderful and daring Iris is off on a new adventure!  After a brief illness, Iris departed this life on November 2, 2015 from Arcadia California.  Iris considered herself first a resident of Hawaii and next a citizen of the world.  Iris was born in New Zealand and raised in Tahiti, California, and Utah.  She traveled the world over throughout her life and loved to share stories of those travels and her many adventures.  From riding elephants, camels, and ostrich's, to visiting the North and South Poles, riding dog sleds, sleeping in wild Africa with lions outside her tent and performing in the Grand Canyon and dancing ballet in San Francisco - Iris was always eager to see and do new things.

Iris arrived in Hawaii in 1946 and soon met and married her one true love Pat Hallaran in 1948.  Together, they created the successful restaurant "Pat's at Punalu'u".  Pat and Iris loved the restaurant, loved the guests, and loved the Hawaiian lifestyle.  One of her favorite memories was that of walking out her front door and going for a swim with her neighbors and her German shepherd in the warm waters of "her bay".  Iris was an active member of SCORE in Honolulu for over 30 years and participated in many local charitable organizations throughout her 65+ years in Honolulu.  Her love for Hawaii never wavered and nothing ever quite compared to where she called home.

Iris will be dearly missed, but she will never be forgotten.  She was a remarkable woman who embraced the Aloha spirit.  Thank you to her many friends in Honolulu for your friendship and kindness toward Iris along the way.

We look forward to bringing Iris home to her beloved Hawaii this June.
