Obituary

Born in Tucson, Arizona on December 9, 1921, Betty, her parents and older brother Vern settled in Colorado where she spent her childhood. Just as it seemed her family was looking forward to prosperity at the end of the Great Depression, her father suddenly died from pneumonia in 1938. After graduating from Canon City High School in 1939, she moved to Denver, and then joined her brother and his friend, Earl "Babe" Beverstock in Los Angeles. Friendship became romance; Babe and Betty married in 1940. When the war broke out in late 1941, Babe enlisted and Betty followed him from post to post, ending in Great Falls, Montana, while Army Air Corps Captain Beverstock completed the last of overseas training. Their daughter, Jean, was born at the end of May, 1944, and Betty returned to Canon City with her new baby while her husband joined MATS, flying the Burma Hump. With the war over, the family moved back to Los Angeles, bought the requisite little home and soon added a new son, John, born in October of 1947. Betty was a typical "Beaver-Cleaver Mom," always there when the kids came home Brownie leader, PTA vice-president, school volunteer. Babe and Betty divorced in 1954. Betty, Jean and John moved to Denver, where her brother Vern and his family lived. These were the most challenging years. Always working one full-time job and almost always one or two part-time ones, against all odds, she nudged, prodded and cajoled her kids into merit-based college scholarships. Our family always said we weren't poorwe just didn't have any money. In the Fall of 1965, when John left for college, Betty completed this cycle of her life. After 25 years of marriage and then single parenthood, Betty was about to enter the next. Still working full-time, she took courses and studied and changed jobs, always moving one step closer to her goalto trade typewriter for corner office. It took another 15 years to reach it and there were bumps along the road, but, after detours in Kansas with her children and a five-year sojourn in Hawaii, she moved to Phoenix by herself. Her extraordinary hard work, her training and her upward mobility in the workplace, all paid off in a big way. In 1979, she became comptroller for Russ Lyon Realty in Scottsdale and reached that final professional goalan executive position with that corner office. She remained at Russ Lyon until her retirement in 1989. As this cycle of her life was completed, she again found a new challenge. As a child, Betty had shown great promise as an artist, but life forced her to put aside her artistic dreamsfor husband, for children, for career. Now, having worked incredibly hard all her life and with enough put away for a decent retirement, she began the last wonderfully rewarding part of her life. Taking lessons, studying and working nearly every day, she became a gifted amateur artist and minaturist. She joined the art league and won local prizes. As she had done years before, she became a volunteerat the Blind Center in the ceramics workshop and at Mustang Library. Toward the end of the millenium, Betty's health began to fail and she realized she really couldn't live alone. In December, 1999, she became one of the original residents of the Classic Residence community. At the Classic Residence, she remained an active member of the community, working on the Classic Chronicles editorial staff, designing its banner and writing stories, and in the computer club, until her final days, when she entered the Care Center. Betty leaves her children and their families: her daughter Jean and husband Paul Hoshall, granddaughter Mary Kathryn and husband Jay and great-granddaughter Kathryn Elizabeth LiuYun Hart; and her son John and wife, Joan, and John's children, grandson Stephan and granddaughter Jenifer Beverstock.
