Obituary

Jean Hoshall died on October 23, 2012. She was the loving wife of 49 years to Paul C. Hoshall, cherished mother of Mary Kathryn Hart (Jay); sister of John Beverstock (Joan); grandmother of Kathryn Elizabeth LiuYun Hart "Katie". She is also survived by her niece Jen Beverstock and nephew Steve (Celeste). Jean was a wonderful, strong and compassionate woman who loved her family and fought for those around her. She loved gardening, sewing, photography and was an excellent cook, specializing in all things Italian. She and Paul met at the University of Colorado in 1962, She was a serious student and he played in a rock and roll band. They were married in 1963 and moved a year later to Gunnison, Colorado - a small town where she awoke on one of her first mornings to the sounds of cowboys driving a herd of cattle down the street in front of their house. She persevered and managed to get Paul through college. Paul took a job with the Federal Highway Administration, and after a year of training, they settled in Topeka, Kansas. After three years there, they bought their first house, Jean got a job and decorated the house with love and care. They settled in to a great neighborhood and school district for Mary. Six months later, Paul transferred to Hawaii, and Jean went along, although she stopped talking to him for about three months. That was the length of time it took for her to absolutely fall in love with the islands. They lived on the windward side of Oahu, and Paul commuted daily over the Pali to Honolulu. They managed to visit the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii during their stay, with Kauai being their most favorite island. After two years, Paul transferred to Washington, DC and finished his government career there. Jean developed an interest in photography and computer graphics, combining her talents into both commercial and personal success. She had always been a good cook, but while in DC, she became very accomplished. She was an excellent seamstress, and made clothes and Halloween costumes for her daughter, granddaughter and her granddaughter's dolls. She had begun to teach her granddaughter the art of sewing. Her garden and the landscaped yard around their house was much admired in the neighborhood. She always took pride in being a good neighbor and was always available to help someone in need or fight for the rights of others. Both Paul and Jean often said that of all of the places they lived, Hawaii was the place they would move back to in a heartbeat. Her daughter remembers their time as a family in Hawaii when she was a child as one of the most precious times in her life. Jean's ashes, along with those of her mother, Jean (Betty) Beverstock, were scattered at sea off Kauai on April 5, 2013. She is missed greatly.
