Obituary

Patricia Ann Thielen, 77 passed away on Wednesday, March 15 at Kaiser Moanalua surrounded by friends and family.

Pat moved to Oahu, Hawaii in 1974 with her husband Jack Thielen. She had a great love for the islands, the unique culture and the rich religious diversity that is found here.

Having earned her master's in social work from the University of Hawaii, Manoa in 1986, Pat went to work for the Hawaii State Hospital. She retired as the Chief of Social Work in 2005 after serving the hospital for 19 years. She was highly regarded as a leader who was not only strong but also compassionate and caring. She advocated for all the patients and was their champion when they needed someone to speak for them. She was also loyal to her staff and peers, and fostered friendships in an environment that was often emotionally difficult.

After her retirement, Pat continued to be very involved in the healing community and was a board member of the  Hawaii Attitudinal Healing Center  . Her sense of humor allowed her to turn challenges into opportunities for laughter and growth. She was also a facilitator who provided a safe and trusting environment for those in need. Pat was involved in many study groups and took classes at the University of Hawaii as she was ever searching for knowledge and enlightenment. Her generous heart and healing spirit touched many lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband and step daughter Jill (John Novac) Thielen. She is survived by her brothers Barry Taylor and Mike Rickman, sister Cathy Taylor, step son Jack Thielen, step daughters, Judy (Don Kennedy) Thielen, Joni (Michael Kauhane) Thielen, grandson Michael Price, and granddaughters, Melanie Thielen Shaw and Mahealani Anna Lehuapuakea Kauhane.
