Rey Carreon
San Jose
Jan 30, 1957 — Dec 30, 2022
Long Beach
Rey Carreon San Jose was born January 30,1957 and died unexpectedly on
December 30, 2022. His loving wife Margie was at his side at the time.
Rey San Jose was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States
when he was 13 years old. He lived in Los Angeles, where he attended Virgil
Jr. High and Belmont High School. Rey assimilated to his new life in the U.S.
very quickly and learned to surf, a hobby that he would keep for decades to
come. Rey later learned to scuba dive and obtained his PADI license, he
loved exploring the ocean depths. He was also musically inclined. He played
the organ and piano and played the drums in his free time. He was in the
marching band for a time in Jr. high.
In 1979 he met the love of his life, Margie. They married in 1984 and began
raising a family in Long Beach, CA where they resided all their lives. Ryan
was born in 1985 and Dustin in 1990. Rey was a commercial driver for over
30 years. He drove propane trucks in Southern California for the first part of
his career and finished his career driving Greyhound buses. His driving career
took him across the country and while he did not like being away from his
family, he enjoyed adventure and the people he met. His love for the ocean
and nature is something he passed on to his children. He enjoyed fishing,
skiing, hiking, golfing and of course surfing.
Rey and his wife and children made many trips to Hawaii, his favorite island
was Maui. Rey was a very friendly person he loved to laugh and joke. He
made friends wherever he went, and Hawaii was no exception. His fondest
memories were surfing in Maui with the locals, golfing in Kapalua, hiking, deep
sea fishing, and making friends along the way. Rey loved Hawaii so much that
he and his wife planned to retire in Hawaii, sadly he passed away before he
could accomplish that dream.
Rey embodied the spirit of aloha. He had a big heart, empathy for others and
he was always willing to help those in need. He bought groceries for friends
and relatives that were struggling to survive. Rey had a deep affection and
respect for the elderly. He regularly helped the elderly neighbors with repairs.
Whenever they had a plumbing issue, a light bulb that needed to be changed
or they just wanted someone to talk to the neighbors would call Rey because
he always came to their rescue. Rey treated the homeless with dignity and
respect. One cold winter night after leaving Target with his wife he asked his
wife to turn the car around and go back just after leaving the parking lot. Rey's
wife drove back into the parking lot, Rey got out the car and handed his jacket
to a homeless man that was shivering. He got back in the car and told his wife
you never know when you could become homeless. Whenever someone
visited the San Jose family Rey welcomed them and made them feel like they
were part of his ohana. Visitors were subject to Rey's nonstop jokes and
laughter and his insistence on feeding them even if they weren't hungry. No
one ever left the San Jose house hungry.
Rey is survived by his loving wife Margie, two sons Ryan (Nancy) and Dustin
along with his granddaughter Kaila, his grandson Ryden that he did not get
the chance to meet, three brothers, three nieces that he treated like daughters
Renelyn (Vincent), Rowena and Elaine (Dave)as well as other numerous
nieces and nephews.
Rey's greatest joy was his family and being a grandfather. Rey will be greatly
missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
