Mr. Shan Fu Zhao was born in 1929 at Gong Zhou City in China and died on April 2, 2009 at Sacramento, California at age 80. He was married for 49 years to Li Ming Liu. He had one son and one daughter, plus four grandchildren. Mr. Shan Fu Zhao was a well known artist, and a specialist in stage design in China. He graduated from Gong Xi University of Art in 1948. He worked for the Music and Dancing Ensemble of Kong Dong Province for more than 50 years. His artistic endeavors included stage designs, costume designs, contemporary heavy color paintings, oil paintings, water color paintings, and paper cuttings. All won awards and prizes many times in China and other countries. He had been granted the National First Level of Stage Design in China. He was honored in China by inclusion in the Chinese "Who's Who" and the Famous Artist Dictionary. As a scholar, he was invited by Russian and Czechoslovak artistic groups. His employment in 1991, as a chairman of stage design and managing, by the Music Theater of Wichita, Kansas further proved that his art work had reached some of the world's top levels. In 1997, the California state governor asked him to hold a painting exhibition at Governor's Hall, Sacramento. In 2004, he was invited to give an academic art lecture at United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Stage design requires a more sophisticated knowledge of construction and a heavier load of knowledgeable and workable art fields than a regular artist. A completed design needs to coordinate with other people, costumers, stage scenery carpenters, light controllers, etc. People always saw Mr. Zhao running on and off the stages during rehearsals. Everyone seemed overwhelmed by his enthusiasm and energy. His costume design for the performers combined a dedicated simplicity with a deep and pure sincerity that always seemed to harmonize with the authors and actors intent. Mr. Zhao's scenic paintings are very creative. Every painting is like a poem that reveals the amazing quality of nature. Even in the most difficulty time of his life, his paintings always showed his eternal hope and cheerful outlook on life. Aside from producing many paintings, Mr. Zhao also was involved in many social activities. He was a teacher at the National Drama Institute in the city of Gong Zhou. Under his leadership as a chair of the Ensemble in China, three musical performances broke the revolutionary malaise after the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and the shows became a national sensation. He was then hired to design a huge "Phoenix Rising" and all of the dancing costumes for the opening ceremony of the World Soccer Playoffs, which were held in Gong Zhou. He was a consultant for the Hong Kong Dancing Federation. When Queen Elizabeth visited China, he was responsible for the planning and design of the departing ceremony for the English Royal. After he retired, he continued to actively paint. He helped to create the Elk Grove Chinese Association and designed new artistic approaches on the staging of many presentations. He also participated in forming the Lung Kong Association of Sacramento and helped design its symbol. He loved to teach and had many students that late traversed the world. His continued painting led to more exhibitions in 2006 and 2008. Mr. Shan Fu Zhao's life was filled with vivid Chinese cultural images. He left us richer in outlook, inspiration, and motivation. The art world will miss him. The theatre will miss him, but most of all, we will miss him terribly.
