Obituary

ALOHA,
Welcome to this tribute and celebration of life for Steve Betts.

We celebrated Steve's life here in the Southport/Oak Island NC area and at his favorite vacation spot Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii.

10-8-15 Ash scattering in the Atlantic ocean waters beyond Oak Island: Because of Hurricane Joaquin, we had to reschedule three times. But with Captain Lee Garvin closely watching the weather and guiding us, on the morning that we finally launched, the water was like glass and the sun was bright. There were 22 of us in three boats. A big thank you to my neighbors Lee and Charlie Garvin, Mike Ferguson and Tamara Oliphant, Wayne and Toby Boles for taking us out on your boats.

11-15-15: Memorial at the Southport Community Center: W ell attended by friends we've made since we moved here in 2012. Could not have done it without the help of Dave and Rose Tester (for creating the fabulous DVD), Sally Buchanan, Barbara VanSlyke, Terry and Mike Evans, Phyllis and Gary McDonald (who we have known since our Mooresville, NC days), Peggy and Rick Purtell, Wendy and John Cifelli, Lori Sanderlin, and Sandy Graves. A big thank you.

11-16-15: A tribute to Steve after the 11-15-15 Memorial: On 10-16-15, I received an email from Mike Evans (a dear friend and golf buddy) after he played golf with another buddy Steve Lominac.

5-23-16 Ash scattering in the Pacific ocean waters beyond Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii: Steve had scheduled two weeks at our Waiohai Timeshare a year ago.  As a tribute to him, a Military Honor Funeral and ash scattering were conducted on the south shore of Kauai, where we had been vacationing almost annually from 1980-2006. During that time period, the only times that we did not go to Kauai were because of hurricane damages and then we visited the Big Island of Hawaii. Steve loved Kauai the best and while we lived on the East Coast we visited every other year.

A big Mahalo to dear friends Liz and Patrick Tamayo, who joined me the first week, and Ellen Bepp, Kathy Breaux, Sharon Yasukawa, and Walter Taoka, who joined me the second week.

The following is the obituary (yes, with the same above golfing picture), which ran last year in our community newspaper, The State Port Pilot , Southport NC and The Santa Rosa Press Democrat , Santa Rosa, CA, where we lived for over thirty years. Thank you to Sally Buchanan and Gloria Strickert (who sat with me at Novant Hospital), to Ann Sullivan, Liz Tamayo and Eleanore Webster (who all flew out from California after Steve had passed away) and to all my neighbors and friends who provided us with sustenance, support and guidance.
