Obituary

Tom was born and raised in a small town in Ohio on May 15, 1939. As a young man, he deviated from a family tradition of following a law career (his father and grandfather were judges, grandfather and brother lawyers) and moved to Colorado with Joyce soon after they were married. He picked Colorado after a visit skiing in its beautiful mountains. He studied math and computer science. He and Joyce had three children (Allyson, Jeff, Suzy). He moved to California to follow the high tech wave and sunshine and lived there for many years. He and Joyce retired in Maui, some of the happiest years of his life spent there, but eventually returned to Colorado. In the last year of his life, he and Joyce relocated to Nevada. Tom passed away May 2, 2013 in Nevada with his loving wife of 50 years and three children by his side. Throughout his life, he had a love of technology, always at the forefront with the latest tool or device, whether it be stereo system, video game, vhs, cell phone, computerhe always had the first. As so many in his generation struggled with email and high tech devices, he was teaching us all how to use it. He had a dry sense of humor, and liked to tease. He loved to tell his kids, as adults, that they could ignore his advice, but that he still had the right to give it. He would say things likeI've told you a million times not to exaggerate. He was a worry wart. You could not get through a conversation on the road without him saying, at least twice, "be careful driving!" He had a patient, calm charactershowing his love through his careful guidance and advice. He would send emails with quotations like "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." He was a keeper. He loved genealogy, kept the family tree, and heirlooms from his family including photos and love letters from his grandparents. He was a collector. He collected art, music, coins, model sailboats, trains, stamps, bonsai, orchids, books, wooden boxes, probably more... He was generous, and kind. He would give someone in need his last dollar, and would stop to talk to someone others didn't see. He was computer technical support to many of his friends and neighbors. He had many interests throughout his life. He enjoyed skiing and hiking in his younger years, started his own bonsai business, learned to sail, did silk screen painting, appreciated a nice glass of wine, enjoyed photography, liked traveling, cooked chinese foodplayed an occasional round of poker with his buddies. In exposing us to his many interests, he taught us to appreciate them as well... to appreciate life, and to appreciate each other. One of Tom's last requests of Joyce was to have his ashes scattered in the warm and tranquil waters of Hawaii, a place close to their hearts. The scattering memorial will take place February 25th, 2014, at sunset, off of the island of Maui.
